A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a popular surgical procedure that rejuvenates the breasts to a more youthful contour. Surgeons describe the surgical excisions to reduce breast volume and elevate the breast glands. Although a breast lift surgery volume change can be achieved with the addition of volume through a breast implant, removing excess skin and repositioning the breast gland up on the chest is important.
Patients seek improvement in breast fullness, nipple position, symmetry, and general discomfort during breast lift recovery period. When discussing a breast lift, many of my patients do not want breasts that are too full or large. It is often “just enough” and “no insurance” that qualifies a change in volume with a breast lift without the addition of a breast implant.
Breasts come in many sizes and forms, and everyone wants different things for their post-op mastopexy. The cost of just the breast lift vs. a breast lift and implants together is a gargantuan element to our initial talks during the consultation. There are many motivations behind the idea of breast surgery for a woman who wants to have a breast lift. A mastopexy or breast lift is a surgery with a license to really reposition and reform the breasts, using an incision pattern set out for the individual’s particular anatomy. It is most commonly undertaken with the help of general anesthetic, as an outpatient; in some instances, it is required inpatient, depending on the ptosis, which is the degree of drooping or sagging of the breast, and the aesthetic results each patient desires. Moreover, with a good breast lift recovery timeline—such as following a proper diet, opting for a healthy lifestyle, and using professional skincare products—a breast lift will last long.
Understanding the breast lift recovery timeline: While every patient’s recovery from a breast lift can be unique, the consultations page describes the widely varied breast lift recovery periods. These averages are over a wide range from ages 17-50, all of which had mastopexy (breast lift surgery) only. See breast augmentation: a comprehensive guide to breast lift recovery for similar information written about a different procedure.
The first week healing after breast lift is the most crucial after your surgery. Proper care and precautions during this time will help reduce risks such as infection, bleeding, scarring, and capsular contracture later on in your breast lift recovery. You should have a caretaker with you for the first 24 hours healing after breast lift to help with basic tasks. When you are ready to go home, your surgeon should meet with you and your caregiver to review your post-op mastopexy care, give you instructions, and answer any questions. If your doctor gives you one of these care sheets, be sure to read it through thoroughly, and place it where you can refer back to it. Be sure to follow up with your doctor for a post-op mastopexy checkup or to remove your dressings and/or sutures if directed.
At home (first week post-op mastopexy):
Wound care: Keep the tape on as instructed by your doctor. If you have open incisions or loose sutures under your arms, you may be asked to apply an antibiotic ointment and clean the area after showering as follows: Fill a clean empty spray bottle with half warm water and half white vinegar. Shake the bottle before use. After showering, dry the area with a clean towel, and spray the vinegar/water solution directly onto the incision(s). After cleaning this area, you may apply the antibiotic ointment and cover the area with a gauze pad. Your doctor will give you specific instructions for healing after breast lift amongst any other wound care you may need. If you notice any red areas or drainage from your incisions, contact your PS office right away and notify them of the problem area and any symptoms you may be having.
Medication: If you’ve been given a prescription from your doctor, take and finish them as directed.
Rest and restrictions: Most patients will benefit from some time bed rest, going for short leisure walks though is helpful in preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Rest with proper back support is also important. It is a good idea to wear a bit of lower back support if you find sitting uncomfortable for the first few days. If you smoke, it is imperative to refrain for at least a few days healing after breast surgery. Do not resume smoking until your doctor tells you it is safe.
Swelling, bruising, and discomfort: Your breasts and nipple-areolar complexes will be swollen, and you’ll have some bruising. The swelling will improve gradually in one to two weeks. Massage as directed by your doctor once your doctor approves. Keep your head elevated as much as possible for the first week to help with post-op mastopexy swelling.
This important part of the healing after breast lift process begins in the week following surgery and can be a difficult time for some, as they may become less consumed with what they’ve been through and may become more aware of the changes in their body. For others, it is pure relief knowing that they are over the hardest part. In any case, it’s a time when most people start to get very interested in the appearance of their scars, even while knowing that it’s much too soon for them to look good. Each patient experiences healing after breast lift at a different rate, so you may not meet all these milestones exactly as described. After about ten days, depending on the patience and skill of one’s spouse or friend, those external stitches that have not dissolved will be removed. The incisions may be slightly gummy at that time, so the nurse practicing the removal technique taught by the doctor may put Steri-StripsTM (super thin, adhesive strips) across the incisions for additional support.
Following the operation, one’s first return to the doctor’s office is either one day, three days, or seven days healing after cirugía de levantamiento de senos. At that time, the dressings are changed, and the surgeon will probably teach someone the technique of doing a complete dressing, consisting of gauze bandages for covering the incisions and dark, comfortable cloth sports bras for extra support. Because they won’t be able to lift their elbows higher than their shoulders for some time healing after breast surgery, putting on slip-on over-the-head sports bras will be out of the question. Sports bras with comfortable wide straps are the best, and a size larger than usual is usually needed for a proper fit. Some people, often out of a desire for more complete coverage, prefer to use extra-large men’s T-shirts to wear over their sports bras at the beginning.
This timeline is written with the hope that it will help you mentally and emotionally prepare for your post-op mastopexy journey and guide you as we work together to get you through the breast lift recovery timeline safely and successfully. Your physical breast lift recovery journey will depend a great deal on variables like whether you had an implant-based breast lift, what techniques Dr. Adams uses to perform your breast lift, and individual factors like how your body responds to surgery. With all of those variables in place, predictably how your body will heal is impossible. However, there are some commonalities that will most likely occur for you.
In general, most of our breast lift patients at Good Look Clinic will experience tenderness, swelling, bruising, and some muscle soreness. You will be in some degree of discomfort but should not be in extreme pain. It is normal to feel fatigued and need to nap more frequently than normal. There will be times when things may not progress as expected for any variety of reasons, but we will be with you every step of the way to address and resolve anything that isn’t within the expected.
Long-term breast lift recovery timeline from a procedure as invasive as a mastopexy can take much longer, as you should allow several months for the incision lines to begin to fade. While you will be able to return to work and regular tasks in roughly one week or so, more strenuous activities, lifting, and sex should all be postponed for at least six weeks.
One thing to consider is the fact that many people do not discuss getting further pregnancies after undergoing lollipops and/or anchor lifts. Further pregnancies and nursing will have a substantial impact on your chest contour. The skin, which was early modified in the original surgery, has already changed its capacity to return to its original role as an effective body shaper. Please remember to avoid the above activities (your surgeon will give you a firm time estimate) for a minimum of six weeks healing after breast lift surgery. After the first few weeks of at-home breast lift recovery, your new contours will be obvious, although it might take some time for residual swelling and surgical side effects (such as uneven contours, in some instances) to go entirely away.
